Meet a Flintknapper...
My name is Harold Starcher. I have been flintknapping for approximately 10 years. Growing up in Ohio, I found myslef walking farmers' fields in search of a piece of history. I was looking for the tools of the Prehistoric Indians...arrowheads and spearpoints. Always fascinated with how these ancient people could fashion tools from stone, I began to attend knap-ins and talk with others about this ancient art. After many years of practice and determination, I am now able to recreate these masterpieces the way that the ancient people did. I have learned to use modern materials such as copper instead of antler to achieve my goal. These materials are more readily available and can stand up to more frequent use.
I have recently been featured in the Modern Lithic Artists Guild Journal, Volume 2.
Many times throughout the year, I can be found knapping at public shows such as The Deer and Turkey Expo in Columbus, Ohio and The Gathering of Four Directions at Fort Ancient State Memorial in Ohio. I am also available for educational appearances at schools and for various organizations. Private lessons can also be arranged.
The next time you pick up an arrowhead or spearpoint, think about the history that can be told in just that small stone.
God Bless,
Harold Starcher
Harold and his wife Tammi currently live in a small town in Western Pennsylvania with their daughter Tessa who was an addition to their family in August of 2008. Tessa keeps them moving but she is such a bundle of joy.
Harold started this business out of his love of arrowheads and the Native culture.
Harold is also available for appearances and educational programs. Please contact us for more information.
